Getting Things Back In Order...And A Project!

Hey Guys! I hope you are all having a wonderful start to the new year! So far everything is going good on my end. We had a busy New Year's weekend with all of my relatives from Kentucky. We shopped, ate, and opened more presents! We always have a good time when they come into town. So yesterday I had to start taking down all of the Christmas decor. That was a job, as most of you know! It's all down, but still in the garage, I can barely get my car in. Tomorrow it will all go back up in the attic. It's kind of sad, but I'm ready to get everything back in order and cleaned. I started looking for all my everyday stuff and still can't find some of it. I stuff things everywhere...lol! I am going to put most of the stuff back where it was (if I find it) but am making a few minor changes here and there. It' always fun to redecorate a little...I did buy a few things at Hobby Lobby that I'll show you soon. Things are looking a little bit better, but in this picture it looks like we're just moving in!

After I get things back in order I have several little projects I want to start and one of them is painting my kitchen island. What do you think about green? A little lighter than the drawer I have pictured, I think. I am also planning on putting a little more stain on my cabinets to darken them a little. I will add some stain to the island after it's painted to give it a bit of an aged look too. I might even sand the edges so some of the cream shows through...who knows how it will turn out! lol...Any suggestions? I'm just getting tired of everything the same color. When we built the house I couldn't really do what I wanted because of budget, so I went neutral. I figured I could add the color with my accessories, and over all I'm glad I did, but I am now trying to make some minor changes without spending alot of money.
Here is a picture I found on the Internet...it gave me an idea of what it will look like. I might have a few more kitchen projects if the island goes well. Sorry this pic is so small...

Well, that's all I have for now...just trying to get things back in order and get back to normal life. I do have Dallas market to look forward too...I will be going at the end of next week. I am hoping to come back with some new embellishments and ideas for my frames. Have a great rest of the week!!

  2. Hi Kristen!

I could have written this very post. I've been having trouble finding my entire everyday decor after decorating for fall, Halloween, and Christmas. I've completely forgotten where I put everything...lol!

Glad to hear that you had a nice Christmas! =)

As far as your kitchen island goes, I love the green color. I did my kitchen island last summer. It was fairly easy, and I had it done in 2 days. The best suggestions I can give you are to do a good sanding and wipe down before you begin. Use a soft sand paper to start. Buy a good primer. Once you have the color on and it has set and dried, use steel wool and gently wipe down the entire cabinet with it. This will give it a nice sheen and then you can use it more in the areas that you want to distress, specifically around the edges. My kitchen cabinets feel like a piece of furniture and without using the steel wool they would have looked and felt dull. Once you are done using the steel wool on the cabinets, wipe them down with a soft rag and then Polyurethane them…they will look GORGEOUS!! Well, that’s how I did my kitchen island cabinets and I'm so glad I did it. Good luck! ~Liz

  6. I'm lovin' that island look. This Ozarks farm chicks abode is very French country with a few prims thrown around.

Ya'll have a wonderfully blessed day from the cold hills and hollers of the Missouri Ponderosa!

  7. Sounds like a great idea for your kitchen. I like the green and the idea of glaze on the light colored cabinets and over the green. I wish I could do something with mine, but now that the holidays are over we will be going back on the market.

Like you I stuck my everyday stuff wherever I could find room, so I'll be opening doors and drawers in just about every room to try and find them this weekend. I'm ready to go back to my "normal" decor at this point!

  8. Oh Kristen I think you should definiyely go for it...it will be gorgeous!!! We have been talking about doing something similar. I'm still weighing my options:)!!!

I hate my house when I first put up all the decorations...it seems so empty...guess I'll go shopping!!!

    Happy New Year!!!

  10. Same thing here! I couldn't find my stuff!! I have been looking in every closet and drawer in my house! I think I have found most of it!! lol

  11. I really like that rustic yet cottage feel in the smaller picture. Since all you're investing is paint, you could always undo what you done at minimal cost to you, that is if we're not counting elbow grease!

  12. Can't wait to see your finished project. The green will look great. Market...sounds fun. The only thing I really miss about the gift shop I had in the 90's is going to market in Atlanta. We had such fun!

  13. Kristen,
Change is a good thing! I truly believe green for the island would be a great choice. I've seen it used on island in a lot of magazines. I have also seen a red island and both colors are fabulous.
I am sure whatever you choose to do will turn out beautifully.

    Blessings,
    Jan

  14. Hey there,

Another vote for the green!! I came *this* close to painting ours green, as well, but ended up going cream since I thought it'd be a better contrast to our warm, maple cabinets. Liz gave you great instructions !! I cheated, though, and used the awesome primer by Valspar (Lowes) which requires NO sanding (yippee). I just wiped island cabs down, put a coat of the primer on and then painted my base color on top of that (hope to add a brown glaze someday). I can't wait to see what you decide on !! Take care, Becca

  15. I think the green would look very tasteful, especially with the glaze. Your home is gorgeous anyway!

I'm not that far from Dallas if you find you have extra time ~ sharing a cup of coffee or tea would be great.

  18. Kristen, whatever you decide, I know it's going to be perfect! That green looks so pretty. My house seems so dull with all of the Christmas decor gone. I'm itching to paint something too. laurie

  19. Hey there !! Thanks for stopping by and leaving such a nice compliment about my *new* fireplace !! YES, I finally got Christmas down ... what a pain !! I know you're thrilled to be able to start fresh, too. I'm glad you decided to go green with your island ... it's going to look gorgeous !! Have you decided on the shade? Good luck and I can't wait to see pics !! Have a great day, Becca

  20. Hi there,

I know I stuff things everywhere too LOL....

I think the green will be pretty...what do you think of black ??? I have cream cabinets and a cream island...I am thinking of doing it black....nothing right away perhaps the Spring...

Debra over at the Bunnies Bungalow did her island a couple of months ago...what a GREAT job she did...

I wish a little fairy would come in over night and take down all the decorations...is that too much to ask ?? LOL

    All the best,
    Kathy :)

  21. Hey Kristen!
16 degrees? That is soooo cold. It hasn't been quite that cold here yet but close. No snow yet either. Bummer....

That is so funny that we both diplayed the frames like that!
I'm honored I thought about decorating like you do even for a moment. I want to see yours too.

    Stay warm! ~Melissa :)
